Commanding General Italian Carabinieri

Brigadier General Carmelo Burgio is currently serving as the Commanding General, Combined Training Advisory Group – Police (CTAG-P), Combined Security Transition Command – Afghanistan (CSTC-A), NATO Training Mission – Afghanistan (NTM-A).

Brigadier General Burgio graduated from the Italian Army Academy in 1978 and the Carabinieri Officer’s School in 1980. His operational experience includes assignments as Platoon Commander, Company Commander, Battalion Commander and Regimental Commander in the Carabinieri Parachute Regiments. His overseas deployments include locations in Lebanon (1982) Bosnia Herzegovinia (1996, 1997 and 2000), Albania (1997) and Iraq (2003-2004). He was assigned to United States Central Command in Tampa, Florida as the Carabinieri General Headquarters Liaison Officer in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States.

BG Burgio’s Carabinieri law enforcement experience includes assignments as a Company and Provincial Commander in Sardinia, Sicily and Campania where he fought organized crime. He has served in the Carabinieri’s Special Intervention Group for Hostage Rescue and Counter-Terrorism. He has also served in the Italian Republic Presidential Security Unit.

BG Burgio’s Italian police and military training includes the Military Parachutist School, Long Range Patrol Course, Sharpshooter’s Course, Explosives Breaching Course, Hostage Rescue Course, the International and Humanitarian Law Course and the Army Staff College. His international training includes the United Kingdom’s Fighting in Built Up Areas Course and he graduated from the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy. BG Burgio holds a Master’s Degree in Political Science and a Masters in Strategic Studies.

His major awards include the Carabinieri Corps Bronze Medal for Valor, two Italian Army Bronze Crosses for Meritorious Conduct and the Portuguese Gold Medal for Distinguished Service awarded from the Portuguese Minister of the Interior. He also received Meritorious Mention from the Carabinieri Corps’ Commanding General for his successes against fighting organized crime. He is a Knight of the Italian Republic Merit Order as well as Knight of the Belgian Leopold II Order.

BG Burgio is an accomplished military parachutist and he has earned the United States Army and Spanish parachutist brevet. He is also an avid civilian skydiver with over 700 jumps. BG Burgio is married and has two children.
