Petty Officer 3rd Class Jarod Newlove, from Kingman, Ariz.; and Petty Officer 2nd Class Justin Mcneley, from Seattle, Wash.; were remembered today at a memorial service at Camp Eggers in Kabul, Afghanistan.
Both Sailors served as individual augmentees assigned to NATO Training Mission Afghanistan train Afghan National Security Forces. Newlove, 25, enlisted in the Navy in 2004 while Mcneley, 30, enlisted in 2001. The memorial service painted a brief picture of the two Sailors. Mcneley, a father of two boys, would have headed home this August. Friends described Newlove as the kind of man you love to be around.
"He cared about others," Chief Petty Officer Patrick Myers said about Newlove. "Whether it was going out on a snowy night at Fort Polk to pick up some items for his shipmates or if it was finding some seasons of NCIS that a shipmate was missing, he was there for you.
"Life brings tears, smiles and memories. The tears dry, the smile fades, but the memories live on forever," Myers added. "Rest in peace Jarod and Justin; our memories of you will live on forever."
There are over 6,500 Sailors serving in Afghanistan and nearly 2,800 serving in Iraq.
